Exercise Rant

 In Exercise

If you have ever met me, you would know that I am a big fan of working out and overall just trying to be healthy.  In saying this, you will also know that I’m constantly looking for new ways to punish my body with grueling workouts.  Now, now I know what you are thinking…This guy’s crazy!  Well, let me tell you what I think is crazy…People who say that they do not have the time to exercise for at least 20 minutes per day!  Everyone has at least 20 minutes in their day to devote to themselves.  Whether it’s watching television, talking with your spouse, or having that nice glass of wine, everyone takes that time each day.  All I’m asking is for the residents of our great city of Temecula and Murrieta to stop making excuses.

I once had a patient who was suffering from achilles tendonitis and foot pain.  She, just like 85% of patients in Temecula and Murrieta told me that she didn’t have the time to exercise.  Her other excuse was that her foot hurt.  I calmly explained to her that I’m not expecting her to run a marathon, but merely walk 20-30 minutes per day.  I also told her to let me worry about her pain in her calf and foot, and for her to worry about getting exercise.  I stressed that not walking was not an option.

Six months later, that patient has not stopped walking.  She has worked up to sometimes 10 miles/day.  Anyone who has ever dropped their child off at Rancho Buena Vista High School has more than likely seen her.  She made the decision that her health was more important than any excuse she thought she had.  She has lost over 100 pounds since deciding to make a change and hold herself accountable.  She now shines as an example for all of Temecula, Murrieta, and North County San Diego that if you decide to make a change you can.

Not everyone has to spend that long exercising to make a significant impact in their health.  I always tell my patients to set goals.  I encourage you that if you are reading this to make a goal to become the healthiest “you” that you can be.  As you do this, it is important to take one day at a time and keep trucking along.  How’s the saying go?  The pyramids weren’t built in a day…  Make this commitment to yourself, and who know who you will inspire.  Thanks again Deb for being my inspiration.
